Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School’s B.E.S.T. History
In August of 2002, David Johnson, the school’s engineering academy teacher and Steve Ballard, the school’s college and career academy teacher started the school’s first BEST team with “Warp X, Blast from the Past” as the theme. They gathered a group of individuals ready to learn about the BEST competition, with the first company consisting of only 28 members. The team’s first year was definitely a learning experience. The team had no idea what to expect but learned a lot. The 2002 team’s robot came in fourth place at Alabama’s BEST, as the hub was known back then, but the team had a lot to learn about website design, exhibit booth design, oral presentation, and engineering notebook layout.
In 2003, the team thought they were ready to take on the best of the best at Alabama BEST’s “Transfusion Confusion”. The team tied for fourth place and earned the right to move on to the brand new competition, South’s BEST, which was held on the campus of Auburn University. The team was rejuvenated and eager to test their skills against the other teams at South’s BEST. For all their hard work, Brewtech BEST received first place in Web design, first place in oral presentation, and third place overall in South’s BEST. The team was beside themselves.
In September, 2004 the team was ready again to begin the 42 days of BEST with the 2004 theme, “BEST Fever”. At Alabama BEST which was held on the campus of Huntingdon College for the first time the team placed first in Website and Oral Presentation but did not advance to South’s BEST.
